Times Tables - Top Tips to Support Struggling Learners

Does your student really need to learn all the times tables facts from scratch? How can you support students who are struggling to learn their times tables?

If you have a student who is struggling, or feels that they are struggling with learning their times tables, then one quick way to support them and boost their confidence is to identify which facts they actually need to learn by eliminating those that they already know.

During the Victorian period Students had to memorize facts from 0 x 165 Table 1-12 x 12 Schools in those days, however, the 0x to 10x tables mostly ignored the facts 11x and 12x, so it actually takes 44 facts to begin with.

In considering the 0x to 10x, including tables, we see that they contain 121 different elements, such as 6 x 2 = 12 However, it is often the case that many of these facts are already known. A good starting point, then, is to identifythe facts that you do know and those that your student is not sure of or does not know.

Multiplication can be carried out in any order so for each fact you learn you actually learn two facts; a kind of buy one fact get one free! By ensuring that students recognise this essential fact you can eliminate the need to learn 55 facts which will leave 66 facts for students to learn.

If your student knows that the rule for the 0x table is that the answer is always 0 then you have eliminated another 11 facts which leaves 55 to learn.

The rule for the 1x table is that the answer does not change; it is the number you started with, so for example, 6 x 1 = 6. This has eliminated another 10 facts leaving only another 45 to learn.

The 10x table is simple to learn and remember; move the digits one place to the left and add a zero (0) as a place holder e.g. 7 x 10 = 70. This might be best illustrated using a place value board or money to allow the student to see the place value of the digits. That is another 9 facts taken care of and only 36 left.

If you can skip count in twos and you know that even numbers are multiples of two then you have eliminated yet another 9 facts leaving 27 to learn.

What other facts does your student know? Think about the 5x table. All the answers end in 5 or 0 alternatively. Multiplying 5 by an odd number gives a product ending in 5, whereas multiplying 5 by an even number results in a product ending in zero (0). Again that is another 9 facts taken care of and leaves only 18 more to learn.

Now sit and list any other facts not already accounted for and then you will have an idea of exactly which facts are left to be learned.

Trickier facts such as 7 x 8 = 56 can be learned with the use of rhymes such as, '5 6 7 8, 56 is 7 times 8'.

Learning times tables does not have to be problematic or stressful. Simply check what your student knows already before you start. It will give him a real boost in confidence and a great place to start.

Make Learning Multiplication Tables More Fun

One of the challenges of elementary school math, usually around third grade, is learning multiplication tables. For numbers 5 and smaller, it's relatively easy for most children to just add to the last result as they learn their multiplication tables. The adding trick in reciting multiplication tables gets a bit more challenging when the child reaches the multiplication tables for 6, 7, 8 and 9. Then, even when he or she able to recite multiplication tables in, the child can really answer the question, "What eight times to seven times?" quickly. The success can proliferate rapidly in later classes is essential if the child is three and four-digit number multiplication, and division, and then learn with the same knowledge and processes in reverse order. What can you do to the speed of propagation of skills your child and improve their knowledge of multiplicationtables?

One idea I used with my own child was to find a set of twelve-side dice (or make your own with four regular dice, by just adding extra dots to two of them and rolling one 12-dot set at a time). We would play competitively, rolling one twelve-side die, and then the other, and giving the product of the two numbers rolled as quickly as possible. His goal was to become quick enough to beat me to the answer. Other times, he played a solo version with a timer in that he had to be able to do a certain number of throws and answer them all within a minute while I kept track of his answers.

For parents who don't have the time, there are several software programs for children which effectively incorporate the same types of multiplication games to speed up a child's computation skills. If you want to ensure that your child has the math skills and speed to do well later on in algebra and more advanced math, add games which reinforce math skills in a fun way to your curriculum. This is especially important for children who are not big fans of math textbooks. Make at least one day of math learning per week a day to let your child experience math as fun and not as tedious problems that need to be solved.

Times Tables 9x Strategy - Think One Less set of ten

This article is from the 10-article series "Times Tables" strategies. Tables are the strategies taught in the following: 2x, 5x and 10x, 3x, 4x, 1x, 0x, 11x and squares, 9x, 6x, 8x, 7x , 12x.

9x the facts at first sight seems to be difficult to learn the facts, since the size of the numbers. There are, however, for more examples found in the set of 9x simple facts make many different types of propagatingFacts.

9x teaching facts

Discuss with students what is special about the number nine. The fact that affected all its multiples, is that nine is one less than ten, this number is multiplied by the same number of tens, less than an identical number. Immediately, without further information, students should see that this is a way of working is a multiple of nine. For example, 9x5 = 5 tens - 5 items = 50-5 = 45

Other models that can be detected byThe students used for practice and 9x facts are as follows:

Multiples of nine straight years, writing a vertical column of numbers from 0 to 9, to insert a vertical column on the right side like 9 to 0. The result is the consequence of 09, 18, 27, 36, 45, 54, 63, 72, 81, 90 9x11 9x12 and should be treated separately as an extension of this model.
The sum of the digits in each multiple of nine is a multiple of 9 or 9 In other words, the figures of the first tenMultiples of nine are: 0 = 9 9 1 +8 = 9, 2 +7 = 9 3 +6 = 9 4 +5 = 9 5 +4 = 9 6 +3 = 9 7 +2 = 9, 8 +1 = 9 9 +0 = 9
The number of scores in a multiple of nine is always one less than the multiplier up to 9x10. For instance, 9x6 5 log (one less than 6), more than 8 orders of 9x9 (one in less than nine). This fact, together with the one described above can work for a multiple of nine years, up to 9x9. For example, 9x3 must have two orders (one less than three), two plus seven equals nine, so there are sevenones, so 9x3 = 27
A single "finger trick" can be used to show more than nine to 90. Keep both hands, palms outward. Think of each digit, numbered from left to right, 1-10 To multiply a number nine, finger press the corresponding number. For example, to show 9x8, put the eighth finger. The number of fingers on the left and right sides of the fingers showing the number of depressive scores and sequence: In this example there are seven fingers on the leftthe eighth and two fingers on the right, the answer to 9x8 is 72.

Resources

Presentation of 9x facts can be easily done using quality materials in which the grouping. For example, with dozens of frames allows a series of nine to find easily by 9 points on each frame. Discuss the number of counters: There are a series of ten or less the same number of them. For example, it is shown with ten frames 9x6 frames shows six of ten, with six pointsmissing or 60-6 = 54th

The trick of the fingers may be displayed on a poster on the classroom wall. This is a physical, kinesthetic strategy to save the facts that students often have 9x. The only disappointment is that it does not work for other groups of facts!

Times Tables & Strategies 5x 10x - halve or place value strategy

This article is from the 10-article series "Times Tables" strategies. Tables are the strategies taught in the following: 2x, 5x and 10x, 3x, 4x, 1x, 0x, 11x and squares, 9x, 6x, 8x, 7x , 12x.

Facts and 5x 10x facts are closely related. As the facts calculate 10x sunlight, they are included with the 5x facts to practice in it.

The teaching of facts 5x

This is easiest to get to the second set of references to2x facts. To understand this strategy, you need to know your students to a multiple of 10, and can halve the number to 10.

Children often see the pattern in multiples of 5, even before an adult who teaches them. The visual cues, auditory and symbolic events in the 5x is the most obvious in all the facts and still considerably higher number 5x10. The model, of course I am referring to is the one that ends in 5, then 0, then 5, then 0, and so on. Just playing"Twenty, 2005, thirty, thirty, forty, forty-five," and so on is very satisfying and so easy to remember, provided you know the order of ten names.

The question is: "Why are multiples of five end to enter '5 ', '0'? As a child I do not remember, it works, but I remember a teacher told me. But the answer is very simple and will be treated by some students: five to thirty. I know that I already knew, but you can notInternet, this simple fact, the 5x tables. However, this concept at the heart of multiples of 5, and should be the lesson of this strategy, one in the middle. Just know that a pair of tens fives also opens up many possibilities for the numbers multiplied by 5 To do so, halving the multiplier and make it to ten (if not "add a zero", because that is misleading).

An example well beyond the basic facts: 26 multiplied by 5

Half of the 26 of 13

makeTen

13 tens is 130: 5x26 = 130

This is an example of a fact number extended. The knowledge of the strategy for multiplication facts 5x help a student with many examples of extended multiplication facts or basis.

The facts are the remaining 5 times, the multiplier is an odd number of them. These products are in between a pair of tens, and so the response can be developed with this fact. For example, 5x7:

5x6 = 3 orders (half of 6 is 3) =30

5x8 = 4 tens (half of 8 is 4) = 40

5x7 is halfway between 30 and 40: 5x7 = 35

The teaching of facts 10x

The facts are 10x in the first place, not heavy, and secondly, they are learned by students as a learning place values and numbers of dozens of names. Multiplying with the course of ten non-grouping, and the process involved a series of purely dozens. Therefore, no special method for the Conservation of 10x facts are needed, except forremember the names of several orders:

2 log - twenty

3 orders - thirty

4 ten - forty

5 log - fifty

6 orders of sixty -

7 orders - seventy

Ten 8 - eighty

9 Ten - ninety

10 tens - hundreds

Eleven and twelve tens of tens of thousands are simple additions to this list.

Resources

One of the best resources for modeling made 5x ten frames and counters. For every ten frame consists of two rows of five, is a multiple of fiveFill the frame half past ten, so that the frames alternating complete and half full:

5x1: a frame half past ten = 5

5x2: A frame full of ten = 10

5x3 = a full ten frames, frame, ten and a half = 10 + 5 = 15

5x4 = two full ten frames = 20

5x5 = two full ten frames, a past frame half past ten = 20 + 5 = 25

etc.

Multiplication Bingo - Make the tedious task of practicing the multiplication tables fun

tables? What a yawn. Why not learn the multiplication tables fun? Multiplication Bingo is a simple game for families and classrooms. In addition to transforming the foundations working hard in practice, a pleasure instead of a drag, actually introduces children to the concepts of forecasting, planning and strategy. Here's how to build a game and play:

1. Create a bingo card per round foreach player. The cards should be about five square tables with the center square marked zero five. I created a template for bingo cards free on my site, you will receive a link to it at the end of this article. If you laminate each card before the game, the cards can be reused to save paper. Players can select the cards with whiteboard dry-erase markers during playback. Individuals can also decorate the back of the card before rolling and add to the fun.

2.Make a copy of the 28 "numbers play" on heavy cardboard and cut into individual pieces. Also, if you rolled each piece will last longer. A set of numbers-0 though 13 should be an "X" in the rear, another set of numbers-0 to 13 should do "a" # "on the back. You will receive a link for the free templates found at the end of this article, and direction to create identical pieces. After collecting the pieces of the game to play, canto start.

3. Pass the bingo cards and pens.

4. Tell the players, the "X" pieces, you will use. For example, if you are working with very young children, you can use only 0, 1 and 2 until you get comfortable with the timetable. As players get comfortable, add new "X" numbers, until the complete set of all time.

5. You have the players, the "X" numbers, we should give them time to write the numbers in the empty squares on the interrelatedPlaying card. Players may not numbers, they do write. Players can also reuse the same numbers every time they want. For example, if only 0, 1 and 2, a player of great experience to be assigned zero to more than one place. A very inexperienced player could only use the number nineteen, to learn later that the answer never comes. You may discuss these decisions after the game and create wonderful teaching moments. Note: If not zero in allmiddle ground can be an automatic compensation.

6. Place all "call plays" You are lying face down on a table. Note: You need all the fourteen pieces with "#" at any time, but you should only define the "X" items agreed early every turn.

7. The caller dials an "X" and a piece of the song "#", then calls the problem. Any player who wrote the answer on their card to mark the place gets. Important if the answer is zero, andIf a player has written more than a zero, it can only score a zero for each problem and can not change their opinion on the elections, how the game is zero. Note: If you play in small groups, the answers may be revised as you go. However, if you play with a large class, you must keep a log of every problem, so the group can validate the winning points at the end of each shift.

8. The caller gives both pieces for the table and mix them. A new callingclick "X" and a piece of the song "#", then calls the next problem. The game continues until one lucky player can call Bingo and reflective. Bingos happen if a player has five correct answers in a continuous row, column or diagonal.

9. Celebrate the winners and discuss all the strategies that helped them win. For example, I was able to introduce the concept of prime numbers and factoring of very young children, making them tell me why certain answers tend to comemore than others. Tell players what "X" numbers that are on the next round, with the help and ask them to really reflect on what the numbers should be, and where they were placed on their cards.

10. Clean the bingo cards, write the game in the number again and again.

Times Tables Bingo

Probably remember learning my multiplication tables (Times Tables), while the school was on, and I expect you also to do so. Multiplication tables was one of those things that teachers went to considerable lengths to make our so that we have learned, because they knew that would be both useful advanced mathematics classes, and the second in our lives. The world very much from my youth, most people in Western countries can now access have changedComputers and calculators, but still know the multiplication tables is an important and useful skill.

While learning the multiplication tables are timeless, so that they are informed by teachers certainly moved further. Once upon a time, the method of teaching times tables principle was always the class and recite it again. Although this remains an option for teachers, many are now looking for interesting andundertake activities to use in their classrooms. Although it is of course an almost infinite variety of possible classroom activities, a particular activity, is increasingly popular bingo games.

It turns Bingo is suitable to use in class. There are many reasons, including the fact that the game is very easy for children to learn, but also sufficiently flexible so that teachers can adapt the game to their needs.

Opportunitiesbe that at some point in your life you've already met the standard or traditional game of bingo that is played with bingo cards printed with numbers. Educational versions of the game is played essentially the same way, but instead of using bingo cards printed with numbers, use the players (students) bingo cards with specific products are printed on the subject taught. In the case of tables playing cards bingo so this would include the multiplicationProblems. The whole purpose (of course) for the use of bingo cards with math problems, has students solve them - and then the teacher should require students to write answers rather than simply check the problems.

The last issue to be discussed in order to find where the maps of the times tables, bingo. Once upon a time, it would probably have to copy a specialized publisher. Today, however, you can simply print custom bingo cards on your computer -If you download software from the Internet for bingo card maker, you'll be surprised how easy it is.

tables & Study Guide - A Table - (In the style of 50 Cent)

One Times Tables - Lyrics & Study Guides (style 50 Cent)

Hip-Hop, non-stop Mr.G.
Learning to Learn Math, Spelling ABC Learning
Hip-Hop, non stop, Let's Rock Non-Stop Hip-Hop
Now come and sing with me.

1x1 = 1
1x2 = 2
1x3 = 3
1x4 = 4
1x5 = 5
1x6 = 6
1x7 = 7
1x8 = 8
1x9 = 9
1x10 = 10
1x11 = 11
1x12 = 12

The secret answer to those tables the last number dialed. Regardless of the lastNumber is at the end of the problem = the answer. For example, 1 x 5 = (5). 5 is the answer. 1 x 100 = (100). 100 is the answer. So it would solve every problem, tables with one. The first number indicates how many times the second number is repeated, and this is what will be your answer. Let for example the number 0 means zero then, do not multiply, so no matter what the number of seconds if it repeatedly from scratch responsealways zero. How will you go to find that the zero and one by heart tables are by far the easiest. Then look at the example again.

1x1 = 1
1x2 = 2
1x3 = 3
1x4 = 4
1x5 = 5
1x6 = 6
1x7 = 7
1x8 = 8
1x9 = 9
1x10 = 10
1x11 = 11
1x12 = 12

Take a good look at the last number, the answer is. Have you noticed that is the same as the second number. This is basically everything multiplied by the number one.If you use this simple method, you will not have problems with ONE table storage. Some found it was easier to remember when their multiplication tables fun way is the device for music, but what always works best when on, get good grades is the primary objective. I wish you much success in school!
