Five Top Questions Parents Ask in Regard to Their Learning Disabled Child

When a parent has a child who is diagnosed as learning disabled, many issues must be addressed. There are the emotional issues of how to discuss this with the child, issues regarding the child's learning skill deficiencies, and what parents as well as their teachers can do to help the child.

One of the issues that parents must address is how to talk to their child about the subject of their learning disability. Should they use the term "disability" when talking to their child, and if so, how do they explain it to their child without demoralizing him or her. What is the best approach to take? What words should be used?

A learning disabled child is a child who innately has an average to superior IQ but with serious learning skill deficiencies. Generally he is working two to two and half years below grade level. A learning disabled child is not a child who is mentally retarded but rather one who is learning deficient. These learning deficiencies can be taught. With the right kind of instruction, a learning disabled child can improve dramatically.

Parents should understand that there are four main categories of learning skills. They are visual perception, visual memory, auditory perception and auditory memory. Once a learning disabled child develops his learning skills along with his basic reading and mathematics skills, he will be able to work well in school at his true intellectual level.

A second issue concerning learning disabled children is how to help a child who has a serious visual perception problem; that is, one who frequently reverses the order of letters or substitutes letters when reading or writing. In particular, these children do not notice differences in similar words. For example, a child with a serious visual perception problem may read this as that, was as saw, went as want, small as smile, stood as stoop, kitchen as kitten, and campers as capture. This weakness can seriously affect the child's comprehension of the material he is reading or make his writing incomprehensible. They can print each word on a piece of paper and then have their child trace each word saying each letter as he traces the word, then read the word. The child should trace the word over and over again until he feels that he truly knows it. The child should then do the same with the word that is similar but not the same.

Lastly, there are workbooks designed to help students develop visual perception. These workbooks can be very helpful if they are used consistently for ten to fifteen minutes two to three times a week. Workbooks that focus on the most frequently misperceived words are most helpful because they pinpoint the problem areas.

Put the facts on flashcards with the problem on one side and the problem with the answer on one side. Example: 6 ÷ 3 = on one side, and 6 ÷ 3= 2 on the other. Parents should have their child study the facts and then go through them with the child the next day giving him rewards for every one that he memorizes and can remember the next day. It is important to continue to review the old facts as you add new ones. (Rewards for fact memorize can be stars or stickers on a chart.)

Make Math More Fun - Truth Behind Making Learning Math Extra Fun

Fun means different things to different people. It does not have to mean "play a game." Making math more fun (or any other subject), happens when a variety of different activities are incorporated directly into daily lessons. Making learning extra fun happens when the teacher has fun in their teaching. Making a class fun does not mean make one day a special fun day. Children do not need a whole lot to create fun, something adults often forget with the mounds of toys and activities we provide for them. Children have been known to entertain themselves for an entire day with an old blanket by building fortresses and tents.  This article will suggest some simple but effective way to bring fun into the daily lessons.



Fun can be music. Use a favorite tune to sing the multiplication tables. Allow soft music with no words to play in the background while working,

Fun can be color. Make flashcards on colored 3x5 cards, Students learn the signs in green and orange in the responses HiLite. Use colored pencils to do the math! Collegiate enjoy this as much as the younger ones!

Fun can be images. Draw a picture to illustrate a problem or problems of a number. Students in the magazine pictures that illustrate some of their homework problems, or write them to a mathematical problem based on an image to find them.

Fun can be built. Use fasteners buildingblocks as rewards for correct answers. The color and shape and size can be determined by attributes in each answer. The older they are the more challenging the attributes are, again middle schoolers love to play with building blocks.

Fun can be throwing. A simple soft ball or bean bag can be used in oral drill, throw it back and forth to the student , teacher asks and throws, student answers and throws back.

Fun can be talking with your hands. Design hand signals for math vocabulary or steps to a process to help memory. Creating a mantra or a chant to recite them each day makes math more fun!

Fun can be manipulating. Many schools use fraction tiles, or attribute blocks. Anything can be cut apart and manipulated on desks and put back together. Post it notes with numbers can be used to do problems on the desk. They can be color coded them by place value!

Fun can be an unusual medium. There are special dry erase markers that will write on windows! They also can be used on many desk surfaces. Giant pencils, pencils that are straws, can be the simple thing that make the lesson enjoyable

Fun can be interesting creative games. Games of all shapes and sizes can be used in the classroom and still be part of the daily lesson! Pencil and paper games, challenging board games,  large full classroom games where students get up and move around or even outdoor activities all of the adjustments available to make learning math fun extras.
These ideas show that you can create a pleasant atmosphere for the class of simple math, but effective. It 'important that teachers integrate these activities directly in the classroom and not as a separate activity or special game time. This creates a positive attitude toward the class as a whole, eliminating the hassle with the students: "We can play a game today," At some point, making fun of mathematics learning is extrabecome second nature, incorporating the techniques as a matter of routine to classes of all ages.

Make Learning Multiplication Tables More Fun

One of the challenges of elementary school math, usually around third grade, is learning multiplication tables. For numbers 5 and smaller, it's relatively easy for most children to just add to the last result as they learn their multiplication tables. The adding trick in reciting multiplication tables gets a bit more challenging when the child reaches the multiplication tables for 6, 7, 8 and 9. Then, even when he or she able to recite multiplication tables in, the child can really answer the question, "What eight times to seven times?" quickly. The success can proliferate rapidly in later classes is essential if the child is three and four-digit number multiplication, and division, and then learn with the same knowledge and processes in reverse order. What can you do to the speed of propagation of skills your child and improve their knowledge of multiplicationtables?

One idea I used with my own child was to find a set of twelve-side dice (or make your own with four regular dice, by just adding extra dots to two of them and rolling one 12-dot set at a time). We would play competitively, rolling one twelve-side die, and then the other, and giving the product of the two numbers rolled as quickly as possible. His goal was to become quick enough to beat me to the answer. Other times, he played a solo version with a timer in that he had to be able to do a certain number of throws and answer them all within a minute while I kept track of his answers.

For parents who don't have the time, there are several software programs for children which effectively incorporate the same types of multiplication games to speed up a child's computation skills. If you want to ensure that your child has the math skills and speed to do well later on in algebra and more advanced math, add games which reinforce math skills in a fun way to your curriculum. This is especially important for children who are not big fans of math textbooks. Make at least one day of math learning per week a day to let your child experience math as fun and not as tedious problems that need to be solved.

Sleepytime Subtraction - Learning Help for Adopted Kids

How many of us have had trouble putting our highly disregulated adopted children to bed at night? Though we are beyond most of the bedtime issues we used to have, I remember those days of wondering if we would ever get a good night's sleep again. Of course, there are many things we do to make our kids feel safe when it is time for sleep but Tim and I accidentally stumbled upon a "kill 2 birds with one stone" technique that we still use from time to time.

We like to use everything we can to our own advantage--that only makes sense, right? Why not use your child's desire to stay awake as a way to get some more valuable teaching time in for the day? Many activities lend themselves to bedtime. Here are a few examples...

Gabriel was having a hard time memorizing his Math facts but HATED to do flashcards. We have some math games we played with him and he did at least one worksheet every day but he was still struggling and we knew flashcards were the best way to get those facts solidified in his brain. Tim started bringing the stack of flashcards to Gabriel's bedside at night and voila! suddenly, Math flashcards were very desirable. He would do as many as we wanted him to because he knew the more he did, the longer he got to stay awake. It worked like a charm!

Even with our oldest son, who doesn't have a trauma history, we have been able to get extra practice for Latin, Grammar, and Math in at night before bed. With him, he enjoys the quiet and the extra alone time with mom and dad so learning subjects that would be considered too hard during the day, suddenly become fun if they are done at bedtime. Who knew?

Here are 4 Activities you can do with your child at bedtime:

1. Spelling practice--take turns quizzing each other on Spelling words
2. Read historic fiction at night before bed as family reading or read each child his own book that coincides with your current studies.
3. Singing educational songs that practice skip counting, multiplication facts, or other drills
4. Have your child read you a bedtime story so he gets in his reading practice for the day.

We have started to use this concept in other ways since we discovered it. I often give history and science lessons over lunch--then, we clear the table and do an experiment or craft that fits with the lesson. Lunchtime provides time where kids are sitting at a table because they want to in order to eat, AND their mouths are full so you can actually get a lot of teaching time in for your auditory learners. Come on everybody--chew with your mouth closed! After lunch, you can reinforce the lesson with your experiment or craft.

Anything that may normally be met with disgust can be moved to bedtime or the lunch table if you are creative enough. For instance, our kids don't like new experiences. They like to know what to expect, so when I first introduced the "Classic Kids" series of audio stories to them I didn't do it during normal "school" time, I started playing one of these wonderful CDs at lunch (when their mouths were full--remember, take what you can get and use it to your advantage!) and they were immediately hooked. If I had tried to set up the stories and made it look like a lesson, they would have squirmed and complained. As it is, they now request these CDs and even take them to their rooms to listen over and over again. How gratifying!

Pick one subject your child is struggling in and try to come up with a creative bedtime activity that will reinforce what he has learned. See how willing he is to jump in and learn when he feels he is getting "extra" time to stay awake. Ah, the art of being a parent...

Stealing Sleepy Time - Kids Say Learning Support

How many of us have had difficulty in our high disregulated adopted children put to bed at night? Although we have most of the problems that we used to have before going to bed, I remember at that time asked us if we ever get a good night's sleep again. Of course there are many things we do to make our children feel secure when it's time to sleep, but Tim and I met by chance a technique of "kill two birds with one stone", which we still use from time to time.

We want more, we usepossible for our benefit - that only makes sense, right? Why not make your child the desire to stay awake as a way to get something more valuable teaching time of day? Activities range before going to bed. Here are some examples ...

Gabriel had a hard time storing their data in mathematics, but hated to do flashcards.
